WIlliam Louis Zirko (1939–2014)

Bill Zirko, head of maintenance at 345 since 1991, died of a heart attack while shoveling snow at his home on January 27, one of the coldest nights of the year.

Bill was born in Gary, Indiana, but lived for ten years with an aunt and uncle in Prague, Czechoslovakia, while his father toured playing violin with several American symphony orchestras. Reunited, the family lived in Chicago, where Bill studied violin for twenty years. Bill was discovered by Bonnie Hunt playing music at Topo Gigio and cast in her movie “Return to Me” in 2000.

Bill was relief engineer at the Hancock for one year and then spent many years at several Crown family buildings (including seventeen years at 900–910 North Lake Shore Drive). Jules Marling of Sudler Marling Inc. brought him to 345 in 1991 when it was being converted from rental apartments to a condominium. Bill knew our building as no one else did.

Bill is survived by his wife, son, daughter and stepson and a huge family of friends at 345 who will miss his constant smile and unceasing joking.

The next Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at 7:00 pm in the Board Meeting Room in the West Tower sub-basement.
